Server
A network-connected computer system that stores and provides
data as well as services to network users.
Simultaneous Users
The number of users viewing a specific event or Web site
simultaneously.
SMIL (Synchronized
Multimedia Integration Language)
A programming language that integrates text and data with
streamed, on-demand con-tent and enables graphics such as slide
presentations, GIF and Flash animations to be seen in
conjunction with archived streamed media.
Streaming
(Streaming Media)
The technology to transmit digital content over the Internet in
a series of continuous data packets or streams to a user's
workstation. The stream is viewed from a desktop using
pre-installed media players, such as RealPlayer G2 and Windows
Media Player. Unlike file downloads, which require the entire
file's contents to be stored on a server before opening it,
Internet broadcasts can be viewed one data packet at a time,
enabling it to deliver live broadcasts in a series of data
streams.
SureStream
A technology developed by RealNetworks that adjusts streams
encoded at various data rates to match Internet conditions and
end-user modem speeds.
Synchronized Multimedia
Synchronized multimedia integrates data, such as text,
presentations, graphics and ani-mation, into streaming media
broadcasts. See
SMIL.
T-1
A dedicated, high-speed (1.544 Mbps) digital circuit that
connects directly to an ISP through a local exchange carrier
(LEC). Using multiplexer devices, T-1 lines can carry both voice
and data. Fractional T-1 connectivity is commonly available for
users who don't need the full 1.544 Mbps of bandwidth.
T-3 (Also Called DS-3)
A dedicated, high-speed (43.23 Mbps) digital circuit that
connects directly to an ISP through a local exchange carrier
(LEC). Using multiplexer devices, T-3 lines can carry both voice
and data at a rate equivalent to 28 T-1 lines. Fractional T-3
connectivity is available for users who need more bandwidth than
a T-1,
but not the full connectivity of a T-3.
