Analog
A way to encode information by varying the phase, amplitude or frequency of a carrier wave.

Audio Internet Broadcasting
Using a desktop as if it were a radio receiver, audio Internet broadcasts use 'push' tech-nologies to retrieve audio broadcasts from Web servers and deliver them over the Inter-net. The technology can be used to deliver live and on-demand audio broadcasts.

AVI
Audio Video Interleave is a common file format for downloading audio / video data over the Internet.

Bandwidth
A way to measure the transmission capacity of data sent over a wire, cable, satellite, fiberoptic cable, interface or bus. The transmission is measured in bits per second, represented in Kilobits, Megabits and Gigabits or Kbps, Mbps and Gbps, respectively.

Bit
A binary communications unit made up of either a '0' or a '1.'

Bits Per Second (bps)
A rate of data transfer, usually represented in units of thousands (Kbps) or millions (Mbps).

Bit Depth
A measure of the amount of data, in bits, needed to represent color in one pixel. Higher bit depth corresponds to greater color display.

Bitmap
A graphics format.

Bookmarks
Index points in a multimedia presentation or in a browser.

Broadband
Analog signals sent at very high transmission rates.

Browser
A software program, such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, that allows viewing of Internet pages.

Buffering
The method for compiling enough data to begin streaming over the Internet. Bandwidth and Internet traffic determine the length of buffering time.

Byte
A binary communications unit that equals 8 bits, such as 0110010
